Continuing its forward march into the business world, Skype today announced the beta version of Skype for SIP for business users. With 438,000 IP PBXes shipped worldwide in 2008, there’s a big market for Skype to tap into if it can master the SMB and channels game.

The Skype For SIP service allows SIP-based IP PBXes to route calls through Skype for lower cost landline and mobile rates around the world. It also enables inbound calls from Skype users directly into an IP PBX system. Additionally, users in more than 20 countries can purchase Skype-In numbers to enable inbound “virtual” local number calling through Skype.

Applicants for the beta test need to be businesses, have an installed SIP-based IP PBX system and a level of technical expertise available to configure said IP PBX. The initial beta will be available for a limited number of participants.

Chris Moore, Skype for Business senior product manager, said the software-as-a-service style offering would work for any standard SIP-enabled IP PBX, “even for Microsoft products.” Setup is simply a matter of having a business control panel login at Skype, configuring the IP PBX, and getting a SIP account linked to a Skype identifier.

Formal certification of IP PBX interoperability would be handled by a third-party lab, but a number of IP PBXes have been tested informally.

Skype is also rolling out a service partner program to certify consultants and VARs on the functionality of Skype for Business in all its forms. There will be a formal certification program and an “e-academy” for credentialing of third-parties to provide support to businesses for a full range of Skype products.
Current users of the Skype for Business website and the business control panel will also notice a facelift, with a more formal look and color scheme moving away from the lighter consumer-oriented vibe of the original Skype site.

Moore said Skype for SIP would be the first of a number of business products rolled out this year and users could expect to see some UC desktop offerings down the road.

Digium has rolled out a seriously hot upgrade to Switchvox in Miami for ITEXPO. The new version includes integrated faxing, video calling support, and XMPP open source IM/chat/presence, along with a bunch of other goodies including introductory API support, IMAP integration for voicemail, a new Windows desktop client, IP phone autoconfig for snom and Polycom phones, and BRI support.

“This release, is jam-packed with big things,” said Digium’s Tristan Degenhardt. “We can attribute to the fact we have more developers and we’re working on the same stuff…fax is finally going in, finally, at long last. We have wonderful wonderful fax integration, video calling support with H.263 and H.263, and we also have chat built in. I would say those were the three things we were lacking, and now they are in.”

What happens when you voip is mobile or is not tied to one provider? It causes headaches for a number of reasons. In the United States it is 911, and the UK 999 service that presents more problems. In both areas many people discontinued their home phone service in favor of cell phones and voip. In our home town a lightning strike knocked out the cell phone tower, but many phones switched over to WiFi. (We are a free WiFi hotspot provider for our town.)

The United States continues to regulate services as if nothing has changed. Thinking like the old days when almost everyone had a home phone, recent regulatory changes now demand enhanced emergency services, or E911. It is a huge problem for mobile voip providers.

The global credit crunch is causing problems in the VoIP and Internet telephony community. It seems that funding, start-up money, and investors left some companies in a pinch. One such company is EQO. EQO was/is a VoIP/social networking play offering a free application that provides free IM, cheap calling and cheap texting to your mobile phone. The problem is EQO was like about a dozen other companies on the market with the same business plan triangle of free client/cheap calls/on mobile phones, including Jangl, Jajah and TalkPlus.

Also in this mix is Jaxtr. Some companies are dying a clow death, others are gone, and Jaxtr just released Jaxtr 2.0. See more about Jaxtr.

The secret to success is the marriage of cell phones, speed dial, and calls to anywhere in the world. With no high international rates and weird configurations, when a company makes calls easy the company wins. If a company can do it for free that is even better.

One of our Windows Vista computers is a busy machine. We run the eBay tool bar, Ring Central call controller, magicJack, live help for our websites, and a few other programs that check things for us every 30 minutes. If you run magicJack and the RingCentral call controller at the same time you will have a conflict on SIP port 5060. You probably noticed that your RingCentral call controller icon is blinking. it is in logging mode. You probably also noticed that RingCentral works fine if you unplug your magicJack. The solution is very simple, and they will work fine together.

Open your RingCentral call controller. Click on the menu, then click on options. Open the “account information” menu by clicking on the “+” icon. Click on “connection”. Notice the SIP port (local port) is set to 5060. Change the setting to 5062, click on “OK” and the problem should be solved. RingCentral and magicJack should co-exist peacefully and both will work just fine.

Financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed, but Nortel will acquire the key assets of Pingtel from Bluesocket, Pingtel’s existing OEM relationship with Nortel will be brought in house and Pingtel employees will be integrated into Nortel’s Billerica, Mass. facility. Pingtel and Nortel have been working together for a while on SIP-based enterprise solutions

Pingtel’s sipX open source IP PBX software is highly regarded for its ability to scale to support up to 10,000 users; as an independent entity, Pingtel landed Amazon.com as its largest publicly announced customer. The Amazon.com installation reportedly supports over 5,000 users in a high-availability configuration.

Skype has released the Skype 4.0 Beta for Windows, focusing on better video calling and conversation management. The focus on video is driven by 28 percent of Skype calls in the first quarter of 2008 were video calls. The new version starts up a video call with a single click on a button with an IM conversation next to the video call can be generated with one click from one window. New “unified conversations capabilities” pull IM voice, video, file transfers, SMS and calls together to allow users to easily move in and out of conversations between single users or groups. There’s also additional ease of use features for installation, finding contacts, and adding new devices.

Beta for the new version is expected to span the entire summer, given the complexity of all the changes made; there are also some functionality holes in the current beta. No final release date has been set for the Windows version and no timeframes given for Mac and Linux versions of Skype 4.0.

Skype has been dogged because eBay hasn’t figured out how to make big money off the $3.1 billion purchase it made in 2005. However, Skype expects to make $500 million for 2008, at least boosting its value if it is sold off down the road.
